Using Cable Modems

Share |

The cable modem grew out of the need for faster networking in the early 1990s and runs through existing cable TV coaxial cables. The cable modem was one of the first broadband internet solutions available to the general public and offers greatly increased speeds and transfer rates when compared to dialup connections. Most people's dialup connection has a transfer rate of 56 kilobits (kb) per second or seven kilobytes (kB -- eight kilobits). In dealing with connection speeds, it is important to remember that some older computers may not be able to fully take advantage of high-speed cable modems.

Testing Connection Speeds:

  • Speedtest.net provides utilities and speed testing for an internet connection.
  • CNET offers a bandwidth measuring tool.
  • Internet Speed is a test from McAfee security.
